City of Winooski Seeks Members for Re-Aligned Commissions

Council

On July 15th, 2019, Winooski City Council approved the re-alignment of our commissions with the City's Strategic Vision areas (including updated bylaws and charters). With this change, many seats are now available where community members can apply to serve. Each commission offers a unique opportunity to engage with residents, to encourage participation in our public process, and to support the municipal services available to our residents and visitors.

The new, re-aligned commissions include the Charter Commission, Finance Commission, Housing Commission, Municipal Infrastructure Commission, and the Safe, Healthy, Connected People Commission. To view our full list of boards and commissions, click here

Of these re-aligned commissions, the following are currently accepting applications for new membership:

Charter Commission

This Commission is a task-oriented Commission stood up from time-to-time to advise the City Council on potential changes to the Municipal Charter, the foundational governance document of the City of Winooski. Re-established in 2019, this Commission is charged with examining options to present Winooski voters with a charter change that would enable non-citizen residents to vote in Winooski municipal elections, protect Winooski voter information, align the School and City’s charters, and consider additional governance changes identified by the Council, staff, and public. As part of this process, the Commission is charged with conducting public outreach to the community through public information sessions, forums, and direct outreach.

Finance Commission

This Commission is a policy advising group to the City Council.  It serves to advise the Council on implementing the Economic Vitality Strategic Vision area as outlined in the Master Plan and ensuring the City maintains an overall strong financial position. Economic Vitality: "Maintain and expand our economic development to ensure long-term vibrancy."

Municipal Infrastructure Commission

This Commission is a policy advising group to the City Council and serves to implement its Strategic Vision area as outlined in the Master Plan. Municipal Infrastructure:  "Invest in the City’s municipal infrastructure, including energy resources, facilities and technology; roads and sidewalks; and water, sewer, and storm water lines and facilities. Infrastructure investment will make our City safe and accessible to residents and visitors while recognizing the critical role that we play in the region’s system."

Safe, Healthy, Connected People Commission

This Commission is a policy advising group to the City Council and serves to implement its Strategic Vision area as outlined in the Master Plan. Safe, Healthy, Connected People: "Foster relationships across generations and cultures by providing a safe and healthy environment and providing opportunities to connect and engage with other residents of the City."

The City of Winooski encourages our community members to learn more about and apply for any of our commission opportunities. To view our full list of volunteer opportunities, visit https://www.winooskivt.gov/volunteer. Click here to sign up for our email news updates.
