Administrative Council Liaison Update - July 2019

Admin

By Councilor Amy Lafayette

Hello, Neighbors! Through my role as City Councilor, I act as the Administrative Council Liaison. Here is a high-level snapshot of some of the items we worked on last month:

  • Approved the realignment of our Commission Charters and Bylaws to better reflect our strategic vision areas and goals of our Master Plan. This work included language changes within each charter, consolidating commissions, and renaming others. The Commissions are now: Finance; Housing; Municipal Infrastructure (formerly Public Works); and Safe, Healthy Connected People (formerly Public Safety and Community Services). We also re-activated the Charter Commission, tasked with examining options to present Winooski voters that would enable non-citizen residents to vote in Winooski municipal elections, protect Winooski voter information, align the School and City’s charters, and consider additional governance changes identified by the Council, staff, and public. The work of the commission will include broad public outreach over the course of many months, with any recommended changes brought to public hearings. If approved by Council, changes would then be presented to current registered voters at a future general election. We are seeking new members on most commissions. This is a great opportunity to get involved in decision making in Winooski. Learn more and apply here.
  • Discussed and approved Request for Proposals (RFPs) on the redevelopment of Lot 7D, City-owned and located at the corner of Winooski Falls Way and Abenaki Way. In late May, we were notified that the Winooski Hotel Group was interested in re-exploring the development of a different lot. We continue to be willing to work with them, but also would like to move forward with the community’s vision of the hotel and parking garage. City Council provided feedback on three possible approaches, which can be read here.
  • Approved a construction contract for Pine Grove Terrace Stormwater Improvement Project to Dirt Tech Company, the low bidder. Project info can be found here.
  • Approved a grant application for PACIF for Police and public Works Safety Equipment, including an emergency eyewash station, drug take-back security cabinet, and manhole cover lift system. More info here.
  • Approved a fund balance request for temporary summer staffing at the O’Brien Community Center, which has seen a significant increase in the number of youth utilizing it (a good thing!). This temporary staffing will let us pilot new programming to learn how we can better serve our community youth. More information here.

I also wanted to share that the Winooski Police Department promoted Officers Shawna Crump and Thomas to the position of Sergeant. Sergeants Crump and Cardin have been exemplary employees of the Winooski Police Department and these promotions reflect their dedicated service and commitment to making our community a safe place to live and our department an excellent place to work. Congratulations!
