City of Winooski Awarded VTrans Bicycle and Pedestrian Grant

Main St

The City of Winooski is proud to announce that the Vermont Department of Transportation (VTrans) has awarded the City $400,000 through their Bicycle and Pedestrian Grant Program. Administered through the VTrans Municipal Assistance Bureau (MAB), the Bicycle and Pedestrian Program exists to improve access and safety for people walking and bicycling through the planning, design, and construction of infrastructure projects.

These funds will be directly applied to Winooski’s Main Street Revitalization Project – ensuring the design and construction of safe and effective pedestrian and bicycle access to this important gateway into Winooski. In conjunction with the recently awarded Northern Border Regional Commission Grant, the total Main Street Revitalization project cost reduction equates to an estimated $1.25M debt and interest reduction – an approximate savings of $550 for an average home ($225.5K) over the estimated loan period.

“Pedestrian and bicycle project safety is a top priority of the Main Street Revitalization Project. Elements such as a dedicated bike lane, widened sidewalks, and improved pedestrian crossings will be included in the final design. We’re excited to be able to use these grant funds towards this end, supporting multimodal solutions for our residents and visitors.” – Jon Rauscher, Director of Public Works

"VTrans is thrilled to award the City of Winooski these funds for the bicycle and pedestrian components of their Main Street Revitalization Project. This project will help balance the needs of all transportation modes in Winooski, giving residents and visitors safe options. This project demonstrates how a municipality can envision big change and move that vision forward." - Jon Kaplan, VTrans Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Manager
