I had the pleasure of attending both the Community Services Commission and Planning Commission meetings last week. Councilor Colston is our regular Community Services Commission Liaison but was unable to attend this month’s meeting so I filled in.
Last year, the City engaged a consultant to help develop a comprehensive framework for City staff to design, administer and evaluate our recreation programs and events. At this month’s meeting, commission members reviewed the goals and objectives that will be used to guide the creation of the framework. Goals discussed included operational structures to continuously improve programming; offering inclusive options for the entire community (and effectively promoting them), to drive participation that reflects Winooski’s diversity; and providing options that support active, healthy, and culturally rich lives for participants. The refined goals and objectives will be shared back with the consultant as they prepare a complete recommendation which will be presented to the City Council this Summer. View the detailed draft goals and objectives in the meeting materials here. The Community Services Commission meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month and meetings are open to the public.
The Planning Commission continued the discussion regarding the minor zoning updates they reviewed at their previous meeting, including lot coverage requirements for previous materials, the application process for permit exempted zoning uses, and historic preservation. The discussion centered on small tweaks we could make to strengthen each of these areas of zoning. In addition to these items, the commission discussed the priority items they would like to focus their work on over the coming months. The Planning Commission meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month and meetings are open to the public. You can learn more about the commission and view relevant documents here.
The City Council and Leadership Team will meet for an annual strategy and priority session on Saturday, June 1st to plan out priorities for work over the coming year. The Planning Commission’s recommendations will be considered at that meeting. The strategy meeting will run from 9 AM to 1 PM at the O’Brien Community Center and is open to the public - click here to view the agenda for this meeting.
