2021 Town Meeting Day Ballot Item Request Process
On December 14, 2020, Winooski City Council approved a new resolution that allows for electronic signatures to be used during the 2021 Town Meeting Day ballot item request process.
The resolution’s goal is to make this process more accessible to community members during the COVID-19 pandemic where in-person and door-to-door petitioning isn’t possible.
If you are interested in having an item placed on Winooski’s 2021 Town Meeting Day ballot, please read the full resolution. Your electronic petition must meet the following criteria:
- petitions must include a clear statement of the proposed language to appear on the ballot
- petitions must include electronic signatures from 5% of Winooski’s registered voters
- petitions must include the name, email address, and phone number of the individual responsible for submitting the petition (the “petition submitter”)
- electronic signatures must include first name, last name, and zip code
- when possible, electronic signatures should also include street address
Electronic petitions must be received by the City Clerk no later than January 19, 2021, at 3 PM.
The City Clerk will review the signatures to verify that there are 5% of registered Winooski voters represented.
If electronic petitions are provided earlier, the City Clerk will review the signatures within 48 hours and will return them to the petition submitter if the number of required voter signatures are not met.
If these standards are met and the petition is not considered a “frivolous or illegal article” under State guidance (see https://sos.vermont.gov/elections/election-info-resources/town-meeting-local-elections/local-petitions/) the Council will vote to put said language on the Town Meeting Day 2021 ballot.
Questions regarding this process can be sent to Carol Barrett, City Clerk:
