Planning and Public Works Liaison Updates – June 2019

PubWorks

By Mayor Kristine Lott

On Thursday, June 13, the Planning Commission and Public Works Commission joined forces to host a public meeting with the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC) on an East Allen Street Scoping Study. CCRPC, with support from VHB, is helping our city with this study to improve safety and traffic flow along the East Allen corridor. There was a similar meeting back in February in which residents gathered to express their priorities and concerns for the corridor. CCRPC took that feedback into account and designed a few options which were presented at the meeting last week.

The presentation included designs for the I-89 interchange, Hood’s Crossing/E. Spring St. intersection, the intersection at Barlow and Abenaki, and the roadway in between. The design options can be implemented in a phased approach. Low cost, easy to implement changes such as restriping of travel lanes and painting bike lanes were presented. There were also more permanent options presented that include moving the curbs to construct wider sidewalks and greenbelts that can support the growth of mature trees.

Full project information, designs, meeting information, and feedback submissions can be accessed via the project page: https://bit.ly/east-allen-scoping

I encourage all interested residents to view these designs and share your thoughts (I am also happy to pass along feedback). CCRPC will take feedback into consideration as they finalize their recommendation to Winooski. The final design will be available to us to implement as funding allows – so no immediate changes will be happening.

The Public Works Commission is currently looking for two members. Interested in serving Winooski via our Public Works Commission? Visit https://www.winooskivt.gov/volunteer to learn more and apply today.

The Public Works Commission meets on the 2nd Thursday of the month. The Planning Commission meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. These meetings are open to the public. Agendas, schedules, and other details can be found here: www.winooskivt.gov/181/Boards-and-Commissions
