[ARCHIVED] Safe, Healthy, Connected People Commission Update 9.21.22

Councilor Aurora Hurd

By Councilor Aurora Hurd

Hello neighbors,

The following is an update from the Safe Healthy Connected People Commission (SHCP), which held an off-cycle meeting on August 30th and a regular meeting on September 13th. I serve as the City Council Liaison to the Commission which is charged with helping the council and city staff meet the Master Plan goals to "Foster relationships across generations and cultures by providing a safe and healthy environment and providing opportunities to connect and engage with other residents of the City."

In August, the commission reviewed the draft guidelines for a COVID-19 Recovery Nonprofit Grants Program so they could offer our recommendations to the City Council on September 6th. The feedback provided was centered on making sure the program guidelines were equitable and understandable. Has your nonprofit met the increased demand of Winooski residents experiencing COVID-19 pandemic health, housing, and economic impacts? Has your nonprofit dealt with sustained expense increases due to both increased demand and now increasing inflation? You may be eligible for grant funding up to $10,000. In September, the Winooski Memorial Library Committee joined the meeting to present their annual update for the fiscal year 2022 (FY22). The presentation started with “Winooski Memorial Library celebrates diversity, equity, and inclusion and welcomes the rich tapestry of experience and background among all members of the Winooski community" - I love this statement and am glad to see that the committee expresses these shared values that make Winooski special. The presentation continued with specific operational data points, including 496 new card sign-ups, 6,036 in-person visits, and 442 programs held. Library staff and the Committee have also been updating existing and adding new library policies, including the Child Safety Policy, the Library Code of Conduct, the Internet and Computer Use Policy, the Library Card and Lending Policy, and the Materials Selection Policy. The Library Committee also onboarded new members! Please join me in thanking them for their service.

The SHCP Commission will meet next on October 11th. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or input!
