Today, I join our City Council, City of Winooski Staff, our partners at Winooski Strong, and the community at large in support of the Winooski School District students who were recently victims of homophobic and racial violence. Please take a moment to view the Winooski School District's official statement.
We stand strong in opposition to the hateful and disgusting language used by the student-athlete and spectators of the BFA-Fairfax soccer team. Winooski's youth deserve safety, security, and every opportunity to engage in their educational and athletic pursuits without the fear of these terrible acts. I am sad to hear that such an occurrence has again taken place against our exceptional students and must use this moment to say that there is absolutely no room for hate in Winooski.
I want to thank the Winooski High School (WHS) girls soccer players, the Athletic Director, officials, and coaches who did the right thing by responding during the game and following the procedures in place designed to protect our students. While I am glad action was taken swiftly, I hope Vermonters across the state prioritize the vitally important antiracism work in their communities to ensure incidents like these never happen again.
Let's make sure Winooski remains a place of welcoming, inclusion, and belonging. The season has currently ended, but you can always view the athletics schedule year-round to show your support.
