Mayor's Update - 10.9.20

Mayors Update

Hello Winooski, I have three important updates for you this week.

On Monday, the City Council began our annual budgeting process by focusing on goal setting for the Fiscal Year 2022. As always, voting on this budget will take place on Town Meeting Day in March. Councilors discussed the severe economic impacts our community has endured during the pandemic and the ongoing need for municipal services. We reached a consensus that we want to retain the same level of services we currently offer while keeping any tax rate increase below the cost of living adjustment (under 2%). Staff will bring us a budget this fall for review during our meetings in December and January. How do you want your tax dollars spent? Please familiarize yourself with this process - your voices are important! Bookmark this page to learn more and join us for any budget meeting: https://www.winooskivt.gov/fy22. Be sure to view the planning memo we received which shows how much property tax the typical homeowner pays to each service area.

On Tuesday, I attended a Burlington International Airport Sound Committee meeting to receive updates. The noise monitoring grant process is moving along where the airport will seek contractor bids to set up equipment in 2021. The noise compatibility program has been approved by the FAA and the airport is working on a 2022 implementation plan. The draft plan advocates for a large share of homes in Winooski. We will bring updates as this draft comes together, but you can view the presentation and learn more about this process here: www.btvsound.com/sound-commitee.

The Secretary of State's Office mailed out your General Election ballots. Please make a plan to bring your ballots back to Winooski City Hall by October 24th. General Election information is available here: https://www.winooskivt.gov/vote. On the back of the ballot, you'll see three proposed charter change articles. We recently sent out an informational mailer to all registered voters with the details of these proposed charter changes. The 2nd Charter Change public hearing will be held remotely via Zoom on Tuesday, October 23rd at 6 PM. Join by computer or telephone - hear details, ask questions, and share your comments. For full details, visit https://www.winooskivt.gov/charter.

Thank you, and feel free to reach out any time.
