[ARCHIVED] Press Release: Apartment Fire at 120 East Spring Street

Fire Incident

On December 11, 2020, at approximately 5:21 AM, the Winooski Fire Department with automatic aid from St. Michaels Fire Rescue were called to respond to a water flow activation at The Courtyard at 120 East Spring Street in Winooski. As units were arriving, dispatch gave an update that there was reported smoke on the second floor and water flow coming from an apartment. The occupant of the unit was removed by on-site maintenance staff and a nearby resident prior to fire department arrival. Firefighters arrived at the unit to find that a fire had broken out in the apartment and was successfully extinguished by the building sprinkler system. Overhaul was done to ensure there was no extension beyond the apartment. A single occupant was transported by St. Michaels Rescue to UVM Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, additionally a second patient was evaluated by UVM Rescue on scene.

The Vermont Division of Fire Safety Fire Investigation Unit and the Vermont State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit are currently investigating the cause of the fire with assistance from the City of Winooski Fire Marshal’s Office. While it does not appear to be suspicious, it is still under investigation. While there was damage to the building, specifically within the unit in question, damage to the rest of the units was minor and they will remain occupied.
