[ARCHIVED] Mayor's Update: Friday, January 22, 2021

Mayors Update

Hello Winooski,

We had our final FY22 budget discussion during this week’s City Council meeting. This was a great way to share last-minute thoughts having spent the previous six meetings digging into the specifics! We will vote on the final budget and any Town Meeting Day ballot items on Monday, January 25. There have been resident petitions circulating related to commercial cannabis and F-35 flights and we’ll discuss both items at Monday’s council meeting. For comprehensive budget information and previous meeting minutes & recordings, please visit https://www.winooskivt.gov/fy22. City Manager Jessie Baker and I will also be presenting the final budget via a special broadcast with Town Meeting TV on Wednesday, February 3, at 5:30 PM. This program will be available live, recorded, and online:

Two other notable items were on the agenda this week.

We approved a grant application to engage the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission in a city-wide traffic calming policy. The result of this work would be a set of guidelines that staff can apply to addressing traffic concerns on any street in Winooski, so as residents alert us to issues, we have a logical and equitable way to respond.

We also approved an agreement between Burlington, South Burlington, and Winooski that commits our cities to work in support of the noise mitigation efforts at the Burlington International Airport. This agreement has taken a few years of negotiation and achieves several goals:

  • formalizes a collaborative working relationship where we can expect regular updates on the noise program
  • commits Burlington to apply for FAA funding annually to support the program
  • affirms that the three cities will seek additional funding from sources that aren’t our tax dollars, (with Burlington exploring the use of airport revenues)
  • advocates for Winooski to have a seat on the Airport Commission. This final item will be on Burlington’s Town Meeting Day ballot for voter approval. If approved, it will be sent to the State Legislature for review

Please reach out with any thoughts on our budget, commercial cannabis, airport issues, or anything else on your mind.
