This February, the Winooski Memorial Library is proud to celebrate Black History Month and in doing so, highlighting our materials and resources for all ages that center Black voices, Black achievement, and Black lives. We have a mighty collection of print materials that include classics of Black literature by Octavia Butler, Ralph Ellison, Zora Neal Hurston, Toni Morrison, and others; new picture books from Nikki Grimes, Brian Pinkney, Andrea Loney, and Atinuke; new young adult and teen novels capturing the Black experience of youth today by Tochi Onyebuchi, Renee Watson, Ibram X. Kendi, Angie Thomas, Nic Stone, Mahogany Brown, and Ibi Zoboi; and contemporary fiction and nonfiction from Ta-Nehisi Coates, Ijeoma Oluo, Barack Obama, Mikki Kendall, Bryan Washington, N.K. Jemison, Raven Leilani, and many, many more.
This month is also the first virtual meet-up of Winooski Reads, a book group for adult readers, and our first selection is Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. It's free to join and a limited number of titles are available to check out and pick up on a first-served basis.
