I have just a few updates from Monday’s City Council meeting. We approved two grant applications, one to cover a portion of the cost of the Hickok Street sidewalk replacement (scheduled for later this year) and one to replace obsolete Fire Department safety equipment. I’m always happy to see when staff utilizes grant opportunities to keep Winooski safe at a reduced cost to residents!
We received our annual gentrification monitoring report which tracks displacement indications such as changes in demographics, housing, income, and other contributing factors. The report shows that Winooski is not gentrifying at this time. Click here to view the report.
We also reviewed the progress report for our Tax Increment Financing District (TIF, located in Downtown Winooski). The annual TIF report includes interesting data like business growth, jobs created, and sales tax collected. Of note, Winooski saw 3 businesses close - however, they were replaced with 3 businesses that offer a higher number of jobs. We also saw a 15% decrease in tax revenue due to the pandemic's impact on business activities. Click here to view the report.
Most of the rest of the meeting was spent on a current design presentation from the Winooski Hotel Group, who owns the land at the bottom of the Rotary (by the Champlain Mill and the Riverwalk). You may recall a similar plan a few years ago which got held up by a parking-related lawsuit. The Winooski Hotel Group has reworked their plans and believes they can move forward. Council has asked that they return with more detailed designs at an upcoming meeting, either on February 16 or later in March. We hope community members will attend and share their thoughts.
Town Meeting Day is coming up and early voting starts next week! For full Town Meeting Day details, please visit https://www.winooskivt.gov/townmeeting. City Manager Jessie Baker and I recently recorded our annual Town Meeting Day budget presentation with Town Meeting Day - you can watch that video here.
I'm also providing weekly informal Zoom meetings on Wednesdays throughout February from 6 - 7 PM. Feel free to ask any remaining Town Meeting Day questions you may have or share your thoughts.
