Municipal Infrastructure Liaison Update 8.19.21

Municipal Inf Liaision

By Councilor Bryn Oakleaf

Hello, Winooski. I serve as the City Council Liaison to the Municipal Infrastructure Commission. This group is comprised of Council appointed members who support the implementation of Winooski’s Strategic Vision as outlined in the 2019 Master Plan. The Commission is charged with helping the City Council and staff "Invest in the City’s municipal infrastructure, including energy resources, facilities and technology; roads and sidewalks; and water, sewer, and storm water lines and facilities.”

The Municipal Infrastructure Commission met on August 4th, with nearly the full Commission able to participate. In addition to regular City updates, the Commission focused the bulk of its discussion on priority projects identified by the City Council during their annual retreat in June. The annual retreat is a chance for the Council to select priority project areas for the upcoming fiscal year (July 1- June 30). Those priority areas are then shared with the various Commissions to review and develop a work plan. Infrastructure-related priorities were reviewed by the Commission along with a draft work plan. Priority areas included in the Commission’s work plan are:

  • Support City in selecting projects for American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and State stimulus funds
  • Review and evaluate a city-wide traffic calming policy
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on a city-wide plan to improve accessibility to public facilities and rights-of-way
  • Review draft language to update City tree ordinance language required by State law
  • Support ongoing work of Capital Projects (i.e. Main Street Revitalization, etc.)
  • Review and provide feedback on Stormwater ordinance updates
  • Make progress on Master Plan goals relating to energy efficiency and climate resiliency

Other items discussed included outreach for a tree give-away scheduled on September 11th by the Winooski Tree Committee. If you have ideas to help spread the word about this event, please reach out to Jon Rauscher, our Co-Interim City Manager and Director of Public Works: jrauscher@winooskivt.gov.

All Winooski residents interested in topics relating to City infrastructure are encouraged to attend future Commission meetings. The Municipal Infrastructure Commission will meet again in September. To learn more, visit https://www.winooskivt.gov/1389/Municipal-Infrastructure-Commission.

Please get in touch if you have comments or questions on the work of the Commission.
