At approximately 8:40 AM, the Winooski Fire Department was dispatched to 37 Mayo Street for a report of smoke coming from a window. First arriving Winooski Police Department units confirmed heavy smoke coming from a second-floor window of a single-family home.
Fire crews from the City of Winooski and St. Michaels Fire Departments arrived and immediately began fire suppression efforts, which were focused on the second-floor bedroom area(s). A 1st Alarm was requested, and additional fire suppression units were called to the scene - including the Vermont Air National Guard, Colchester Fire Department, and an ambulance unit from St. Michaels Fire and Rescue. A forty-year-old male occupant was found on the second floor, removed from the structure, then transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The fire is not suspicious in nature, however, due to the many potential sources, the exact cause is not known at this time. The structure sustained heavy smoke and heat damage.
Additional incident support was provided by the Vermont State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, the Vermont Division of Fire Safety, Green Mountain Power, and Vermont Gas.
