[ARCHIVED] Press Release: HUD Joins Mayor Lott to Honor Pabitra Khatiwoba With Unsung Hero Award

Today, U.S. Housing and Urban Development Vermont State Director Sean Thomas joined City of Winooski Mayor Kristine Lott and Winooski Housing Authority Executive Director Katherine Decarreau to honor Winooski Housing Authority resident Pabitra Khatiwoba with the Unsung Hero of Housing Award.

The Unsung Hero of Housing Award is a new initiative by HUD’s Vermont Office. The award honor’s Vermont public housing residents, staff members or volunteers who exemplify kindness, generosity, and neighborliness in great abundance to their community.

Pabitra Khatiwoba has been instrumental in providing an essential link between the housing authority and its residents.  She has volunteered her time and energy in providing not only interpretation of complex information to people with limited English, but she is—in many ways, a cultural liaison; a bridge between new Americans and the community of which they are an integral part.

“We at HUD are happy to recognize Pabitra today for her service to the people of Winooski,” said Sean Thomas, HUD’s Vermont State Director. “She demonstrates the qualities of a true hero by helping those who find themselves in need. She is a true expression of what makes Vermont a great place to live and a true credit to the city of Winooski and the residents of the Winooski Housing Authority.”

“We are immensely proud of the work Pabitra has done to support our neighbors in Winooski,” said Mayor Kristine Lott. “Housing is one of the key elements of Winooski’s Strategic Vision and it is inspiring to see this level of community engagement. Pabitra exemplifies Winooski’s legacy of welcoming and opportunity and we are so thankful for her service – it is an honor to recognize her incredible achievements through this program!”

Pabitra has gone above and beyond in many instances, such as relaying critical health and safety information to the residents during the COVID pandemic. She also helped with a complicated paving project, facilitating the movement of tenants’ vehicles so improvements could be made in an efficient and timely way.

“Pabitra is embedded in the community in which she serves, and selflessly gives of her time and talent to help her neighbors, in addition to having a full-time job,” said Katherine Decarreau, Winooski Housing Authority Executive Director. “She continues to offer her kindness and generosity to the Winooski Housing Authority, and her neighbors. This community is very fortunate to have her.”
